Applicants who wish to become instructors are selected on how well they meet the criteria to teach Mental Health First Aid Canada for Adults Who Interact with Youth 12 to 24 years of age (MHFA Canada Youth). Instructor candidates are screened through a rigorous selection process to ensure the following criteria are met:
5.5 Day Youth Instructor Training Course

Experience in the field of mental health and mental illness

Good knowledge of mental disorders and their treatment as applicable to youth

Experience delivering training/teaching effectively to adult learners
-
Knowledge of the range of mental health services for youth in their area

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Experience in networking with community partners

Positive attitudes towards people with mental health problems

Enthusiasm to reduce stigma/discrimination associated with mental illness

Good business plan or organizational support to ensure MHFA Canada sustainability

3 Day Youth Instructor Course

Completion of the MHFA Canada Basic Instructor course
- Instructor status in good standing
- Good knowledge of mental disorders and treatments as applicable to youth

Personal or professional experience with youth with mental health problems

Good knowledge of the range of mental health services for youth in their area

Good business plan or organizational support to ensure MHFA Canada sustainability
